Getting Started
Only you can decide. No one in AA will tell you whether you are or are not alcoholic. If drinking is causing problems in your life, or if you repeatedly drink more than you intend, AA may be worth looking into.
AA does not diagnose anyone. No one at an AA meeting will decide for you whether you are alcoholic, and no one will require you to label yourself before you attend. Many people first come to AA because they are worried about their drinking. Some have tried to stop and found they could not stay stopped. Some drink more than they intend. Some experience blackouts, memory lapses, damaged relationships, legal trouble, work problems, or private fear about what drinking is doing to their life. You do not need to be certain before coming to a meeting. You are welcome to attend simply to listen. AA is made up of people who have asked themselves the same question and found help by talking with others who understand. If you would like to talk to someone first, call San Fernando Valley Area of Alcoholics Anonymous at 818-988-3001.
