What to Expect
No. You never have to speak. Many newcomers just listen for their first few meetings, weeks, or months. If you do not want to share, you can pass or simply say you are there to listen.
You never have to say anything at an AA meeting. Listening is allowed, and it is how many people start. If the meeting goes around the room and you do not want to speak, you can say, "I'll pass," or "I'm just here to listen today." No one should pressure you to tell your story or explain why you are there. Some people share at their first meeting. Others listen quietly for a long time before they say anything. Both are fine. AA is there when you are ready, and you can take things at your own pace. Find a meeting at /meetings/.
