What to Expect

Open meetings are for anyone, including family, friends, students, or people who are simply curious about AA. Closed meetings are for people who have a desire to stop drinking or think they may have a drinking problem.

AA meetings generally come in two main types: open and closed. Open meetings may be attended by anyone. This can include people with drinking problems, family members, friends, students, professionals, or anyone who wants to learn more about AA. Closed meetings are for people who have a desire to stop drinking, including those who think they may have a drinking problem. Closed meetings give members a place to speak more freely with others who share the same problem. If you are worried about your own drinking, you are welcome at either type. If you are a family member or supporter wanting to learn about AA, look for an open meeting. Meeting listings usually show whether a meeting is open or closed.
