Getting Involved

A sponsor is an experienced AA member who helps guide another member through the program one-on-one. You do not need a sponsor at your first meeting. Many people find one after attending for a while.

A sponsor is a more experienced AA member who shares their own recovery experience and helps guide another person through AA's program. A sponsor is someone you can talk to, ask questions, and learn from as you get started. You do not need a sponsor to attend meetings, and you do not need one before your first meeting. Many people attend for a while, listen, meet members, and then ask someone whose recovery they respect. There is no rush. Sponsorship is voluntary, and the relationship should be based on trust and shared AA experience. To get started, find a meeting at /meetings/.
